HBVintage Linen Backing Process
Evaluation
For each poster, we start by carefully examining both the front (recto) and back (verso), checking for stamps, handwriting, or evidence of previous conservation work. Using techniques such as ultraviolet, transmitted, and raking light, we assess the poster’s condition to determine the best treatment approach.
Washing The Poster
Once the surface has been cleaned and cleared of writing or other marks, the poster is humidified and carefully washed using a method designed to reduce soluble acidic components in the paper. Water is applied only after thorough testing confirms that the design layer is stable and will not be damaged.
Linen Backing
After washing, the poster is carefully dried to evaluate the effectiveness of the cleaning treatment. If the results are satisfactory, it is then humidified and mounted onto the prepared lining screen using a water-based adhesive, and left to dry thoroughly.
Finished Poster
If additional stain reduction is required, further washing cycles are performed before considering any stronger or more intensive treatments. Once this process is finished, the poster is dried under tension, resulting in a clean, stable, and perfectly flat surface.

De-acidification Bath
These baths are given to posters that have been exposed to moisture or water damage. Once a poster has been exposed to moisture, and with enough time, the affected areas will begin to oxidize and leave stains and discoloration. This is usually a product of improper storage or incorrect use of framing materials.
Common damages that can occur from moisture is: discoloration, stains, foxing, and/or mold. Believe it or not, but we fight water damage with more water. The severity of the water damage will dictate which bath(s) we use.
Linen-backing
This is the main part of our process, the conservation stage. We mount posters on a high quality artist canvas with a layer of strong acid free, archival paper. We use our own propriety blend of buffered, anti fungal wheat paste.
This incredible formula stabilizes the paper from deterioration, and provides a support for restoration. The linen-backing process helps to make the poster sturdy for handling and framing, adding value at the same time.
Restorations
Restoration work is a broad term used to describe any kind of work that comes after the poster has been Linen Backed. This includes the following:
Patch work: Missing corners, holes, rips, and tears can all be repaired with our massive archive of paper. We closely match the tone of the paper to the poster, and trim out a patch to fuse into place.
Touch ups: Folds, creases and other forms of missing ink or artwork are tackled in our touch-up room to precisely match the color to the original.
